Steam-Age Factoids
1. The Flying Scotsman was built in 1928, and became the first train to run between London and Edinburgh non-stop.

2. A special water trough between the rails enabled the train to scoop up tons of water without slowing down…

3. In 1934 The Flying Scotsman set a new record - the first train to hit 100 mph.

4. A by-word in luxury travel, there was a cocktail bar, fine restaurant, and, even a hairdresser’s compartment…

5: The engine driver had to watch out for no less than 200 Checkpoints - signals & boxes along the route - where his performance would be clocked...

The London to Edinburgh Trial by Vintage Car

The Endurance Rally Association is pleased to announce plans for The Flying Scotsman - London to Edinburgh Trial, an all-new event, intended for drivers of pre-war cars.

Cars will depart from Brooklands on 27th March, 2009, and drive through the Chilterns, the Cotswolds, the Derbyshire Peak District, the Yorkshire Moors, and into the Scottish Borders. A scenic route up the spine of rural England and into remote Scottish moors will make for a challenging drive in a pre-war car.

The event will be run in three legs, with overnight stops in the shadow of Warwick Castle, and then on to the Yorkshire Moors and Agatha Christie's favourite hotel at Harrogate.

Cars must be: Pre-1941 model types. Cars of a proven pre-war design, such as HRG and MG TC, will be accepted at the discretion of the Selection Committee. A class for Veteran cars is planned, whith its own separate time-schedule and awards.

The route will be timed at Checkpoints along the way, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in keeping with a Classic Reliability Trial will be presented at the gala prizegiving dinner, along with Class Awards and trophies for the best peforming crews overall.

A luggage-bus for two-seater cars will be part of the back up, along with an experienced rally-doctor and medical crew, and mobile workshops for mechanical first-aid.

Organised by the same team that brought you the Monte Carlo Challenge, Pirelli Classic Marathon and the Peking to Paris, a maximum of 60 crews will be accepted. This is planned as an arduous, challenging and sporting drive – it will not be easy. But with good standard of hotel accommodation en-route and the finish.

For those who wish to travel in greater comfort… there is always the train.

This will be an ideal shake-down for those contemplating the 2010 Peking to Paris.
