Firth of Clyde to Glenagles
After being forced to spend a few years resting in the sidings, the Flying Scotsman – the UK’s premier rally designed exclusively for Vintage motorcars – once again built up a full head of steam and returned to the ‘tracks’ in 2022. This blue riband event saw over 90 of the finest pre-war vehicles take to the scenic byways of Northern England and Scotland, bringing great joy to both the participants and the spectators who lined the route.
Since its first outing in 2009, the Flying Scotsman has built its own very special place on the vintage motoring calendar. There is a definite magic about it, it is escapism at its very best, providing an opportunity to abscond from the tumult of the modern world and drift back to a time when the roads were not so saturated, and life was simpler.
Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, planning is already underway for the next edition, timetabled for 14 – 16 April 2023. The spring adventure will depart the shores of the Firth of Clyde on a three-day exploration of Scotland and the North of England, finishing at the palatial Gleneagles, with each day packed full of fine roads, tremendous company, friendly competition (suitable for all levels of experience) and of course, exquisite cars.

The Route
Our Route Planners are already busy at work penning a new course for the next first-class outing of this premier event. Over three days, they are timetabling a combination of scenic regularities on remote country roads, exciting special tests and interesting rest stops where crews can share the camaraderie borne out of shared adventure and close competition.
Keeping true to Philip Young’s original pioneering vision and ethos for the Flying Scotsman, the HERO-ERA is always looking at ways to keep the event fresh and interesting. As such, the 2023 event actually starts by heading south from Turnberry into Northern England. This enables classic roads from previous editions to be enjoyed in a different way…
Set against a brooding backdrop of the wild seas of the Firth of Clyde simply punctuated by the unique outline of Ailsa Craig, the Turnberry Resort provides a perfect starting point for this latest adventure. In fact, this luxurious lodging (formerly the Station Hotel) owes its very existence to the railways when it was built by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company in 1906 as part of the first purpose-planned golfing resort in Britain.
Leaving Turnberry, Day One sees us quickly taking to the uplands of Dumfries and Galloway. Lonely ribbons of tarmac cross the raised bogs and rounded hills of this wild and remote landscape and will be explored fully during the morning. The first special tests then follow before the route crosses over the border to enjoy more remote roads as it traces the line of Hadrian’s Wall to reach Slaley Hall – set in the heart of the Northumberland countryside.
An early start on Saturday precedes a longer day on the road as the morning route initially heads south once again, into the fine driving roads of the Northern Pennines before turning north to re-cross the border and trace a largely direct route through the scenic Southern Uplands to a night halt just outside Edinburgh.
The third and final day begins with a crossing of the Firth of Clyde before the rest of the day is spent in the heather-clad hills of the southern and central Highlands circumnavigating Loch Tay before returning to the final terminus at the world famous Gleneagles Hotel – another railway hotel of old, built in 1924 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company.
