FIVA – Protecting, Preserving and Promoting World Motoring Heritage since 1966

Who is FIVA?

FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) is the largest classic vehicle organisation in the world and represents historic vehicle owners in over 70 countries. FIVA’s priority is to enable you to enjoy your historic car (and motorcycle) now and in the future. This is adequately described in the FIVA slogan: “Yesterdays Vehicles on Tomorrows Roads”.

FIVA issues two types of FIVA Cards, the FIVA Identity Card and the FIVA Youngtimer Registration Document. The basis for each type of card is a precise recording of vehicle related data which is securely stored in a FIVA data base. This enables FIVA to record classic cars worldwide as well as in each individual member country.

The FIVA Identity Card

The FIVA Identity Card is an international standardised document generated in the name of FIVA. It is issued for a historic vehicle, this is defined as being a mechanically driven (powered) street vehicle (car, motorcycle, utilitarian vehicles) fulfilling among others the following criteria:

-It is at least 30 years old

-It is in a historically correct and maintained state

-It is not used on a day-to-day basis and is thus a part of our technical and cultural heritage.

A FIVA Identity Card is issued after a technical inspection of the vehicle. This is to ensure that the vehicle complies with the FIVA Technical Code and its declared specification.

The FIVA Card:

-Shows all important data of the vehicle

-Informs on the known history of the vehicle

-Describes all modifications made to the vehicle after the first delivery

-Documents these facts as an independent body

Modifications are all variations from the standard (specifications) in which the vehicle was delivered by the manufacturer. If available, the date and the name of the persons who carried out the modifications are recorded too.

Advantage of FIVA Card

The benefit of owning a FIVA Card are as follows:

-Extensive independent documentation of vehicle data

-Modifications and remodeling are recorded on the card

-Data and pictures are clearly attributed to the vehicle

-Helpful for acquiring recordation as a historic (veteran) vehicle in various countries

-International recognition, e.g., allows entry into low-emission zones in various countries

-Limited validity (10 years or change of owner) increases credibility

Vehicles with a FIVA Card are authentic vehicles:

-And are what they are recorded to be

-Which were produced by the indicated manufacturer

-Which were assembled at the recorded period

It is worthwhile for a vehicle owner to complete an on-line application for a FIVA Card. The application process enables the vehicles details to be stored on The FIVA database.

This will enable FIVA to accurately store information in any future representation regarding the worldwide use of classic vehicles.

Definitions in connection with FIVA Card

The main identity of a vehicle is the chassis, the frame, the monocoque or the self-carrying basic car body.

The identity is the exact and complete combination of the following data:

-Manufacturer of vehicle, indicating city and country

-Brand, model, and serial type

-Identification numbers

-Production year and the vehicle history connected to that.

The FIVA Youngtimer Registration Document

A FIVA Youngtimer Card is issued for a vehicle which

-Is between 20 and 29 years of age

-Is in good condition and preservation

-Is usually used during leisure time

-May become eligible for a FIVA Identity Card upon reaching 30 years of age.

The FIVA Youngtimer Registration document is usually issued without a technical inspection of the car, but comprises comparable information like the FIVA Identity Card.

How to apply for and receive a FIVA Card?

On the application by a vehicle owner, FIVA may issue a FIVA Card for historic vehicles which comply with the current FIVA Technical Code.

A FIVA card may only be requested by using the FIVA card on-line application system.
This can be found at www.fivamembers.org.

By applying for a FIVA Card the applicant consents to the storing of the vehicle‘s data in the secure FIVA data base.

The issuance of a FIVA Card requires a physical inspection by a FIVA representative, and the issuance of an inspection report. During the inspection process, the original status of the vehicle will be clarified (configuration, material, specification etc.). The original recorded information will be compared with the vehicle as it is found at the time of the inspection.

A FIVA Card may be issued provided the inspection report is positive.
